Problem
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, sharing personal health information like a vaccine status became a top priority on a global scale. This posed security risks, and it presented challenges for digital security protocols, especially because companies were rushing to provide quick solutions.
Solution
Create a trifecta of digital platforms built on blockchain technology, working together to provide patients with ownership of their health records.

My Work
The Patient Experience
Patients had full ownership of their records and could share them without having to provide any personal information.
The Provider Platform
Providers had an easy way to upload vaccination credentials after a patient received a Covid-19 vaccine shot.

The Public Verification App for Businesses
Businesses could verify people's vaccination status without having to access any of their personal health information.
My Process
My Design Process
My work spanned from sketching, information architecture and user flows to wireframes and clickable prototypes. Soon after launching our MVP, we brought on two additional designers and I took on a lead role, helping to ensure product consistency across platforms.

Low Fidelity Work
After establishing the visual language and basic flows within the patient-facing app, I worked on building out the scaffolding for new features based on our testing and research cycles. Having additional designers helped us move faster and spend more time on complex features.
Foundational Research
Using an early-stage POC, our research team led 10 usability sessions with patients to gather data around pain points and challenges. In addition, they conducted 8 in-depth interviews with patients and providers. The insights helped to determine a go-to-market strategy, as well as data to fuel the development of new features.
The Trifecta
Several iterative cycles brought us to a V2 product launch in the Providence Health & Services ecosystem. Providers, patients, and businesses were able to view and share vaccine credentials in a secure way. We accomplished our main goal to help protect patient data by leveraging innovative tech and connecting the dots.
The Outcome
Outreach
The landscape of Covid-19 regulations and vaccine rollout programs across the country was rapidly changing. This meant our team had to adapt to the shifting priorities for healthcare organizations and provide them with product updates and learning materials for a smooth roll-out.

Analytics
Although our analytics seemed great within the Providence Health patient segment, we soon learned about a significant twist that set us back.
Plot Twist
The big surprise was that people across the country seemed less concerned about sharing records securely than we assumed – because we have all become so used to sharing personal data. This made our secure blockchain solution less relevant in the competitive landscape of emerging vaccination apps, and the project was sunset at the end of 2021.
